The forward deployed engineer salary in India is roughly ₹13–21 L a year at the median, based on Levels.fyi, Glassdoor and AmbitionBox data, with a top tier at AI labs and funded startups paying ₹35–90 L. Freshers who enter through IT-services FDE practices typically start at ₹10–18 L. The ₹35–55 L fresher figures circulating on LinkedIn are not typical.
Key takeaways
- Verified medians: Levels.fyi ₹17.7 L, Glassdoor ₹12.9–14.2 L average, 6figr ₹18.7 L, AmbitionBox ₹20.6 L. Treat ₹13–21 L as the centre of the market.
- Employer tier moves pay more than city or years: IT-services FDE practices pay ₹10–18 L; AI labs and funded startups pay ₹35–90 L.
- Bengaluru has about half of Indian FDE hiring and the highest ceiling. Hyderabad is top three and dominated by GCC and services employers.
- The US median is $173,816 across 1,000 postings, roughly eight times the Indian median in nominal terms.
- Your first offer depends on what you can show. A deployed system with an eval report moves you from the services band toward the startup band.
What is the forward deployed engineer salary in India?
There is no single number, because each source samples different employers and the title is used loosely. A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds and deploys software, usually AI systems, inside a customer’s organisation; our pillar on what a forward deployed engineer is covers the role itself. The table lists every public source we consider reliable as of October 2026.
| Source | What it measures | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Levels.fyi India | 12 verified submissions | Median ₹17.7 L; 75th percentile ₹42.2 L |
| Glassdoor India | Self-reported, FDE and FDSE titles | Average ₹12.9–14.2 L; 90th percentile ₹34–40 L |
| AmbitionBox | Forward Deployed Software Engineer | Average ₹20.6 L |
| 6figr | Self-reported | Average ₹18.7 L |
| CIEL HR, July 2026 | Client offers, skewed to funded AI firms | Entry ₹35–45 L; senior ₹70–90 L |
Read it as a distribution, not a contradiction. Half of Indian FDEs earn under about ₹18 L. A quarter earn above ₹42 L. The gap between those two groups is almost entirely which company they work for.
Forward deployed engineer salary by experience
Years of experience matter, but less than in conventional software roles, because the FDE title is new and most hiring is lateral. Bloomberry’s analysis of 1,000 postings found 60% ask for 3–5 years, 20% for 6–8 years and only 12% for 0–2 years.
| Experience | Verified data points | Directional band (coaching blogs) | Our read |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–2 years (fresher, early career) | IT-services FDE practices ₹10–18 L; Glassdoor lower half | ₹18–28 L (BuildFastWithAI) | ₹8–18 L is typical. ₹18–28 L needs a strong portfolio or a funded startup. |
| 3–6 years | Levels.fyi median ₹17.7 L; AmbitionBox ₹20.6 L; CIEL entry ₹35–45 L at funded firms | ₹28–55 L | ₹18–40 L is common. ₹40 L+ at labs and funded startups. |
| 7+ years | Levels.fyi 75th percentile ₹42.2 L; Glassdoor 90th percentile ₹34–40 L; CIEL senior ₹70–90 L | ₹55–90 L | ₹35–60 L is common. ₹70–90 L at Cartesia-tier employers. |
The directional bands come from coaching-company blogs. They are not wrong for their audience, but they describe the top half of the market, and they are often quoted without that caveat.
FDE salary in Hyderabad, Bangalore and NCR
City-level FDE salary data does not yet exist at a reliable sample size. What we can say with confidence is who is hiring in each city, and employer tier sets the band. CIEL HR counted 52 organisations hiring FDEs in India in July 2026, up 130% year on year, with Bengaluru at about 50% and Hyderabad in the top three.
| City | Share of Indian FDE demand | Main employers | Expected band, by employer tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | About 50% (CIEL HR) | Sarvam AI, Google Cloud Applied AI, Databricks, Cartesia, Anthropic (office since February 2026) | Widest: ₹10–18 L at services firms to ₹70–90 L at Cartesia |
| Hyderabad | Top three (CIEL HR) | Turing, Sutherland, Pulsora, EPAM, TCS, Accenture | ₹10–18 L at services and GCC entry level; ₹20–40 L for experienced hires at product and GCC teams |
| Delhi NCR | Top three (CIEL HR) | MongoDB and Coralogix (Gurgaon), OpenAI (Delhi office) | Product GCC bands; [PLACEHOLDER: verified NCR median] |
| Mumbai | Smaller | Supervity; OpenAI office planned | [PLACEHOLDER: verified Mumbai median] |
The Hyderabad pattern is more jobs per candidate at the ₹10–20 L level and fewer at the top. Indeed shows roughly 75 “forward deployed” postings in Hyderabad against about 400 in Bengaluru, though the Bengaluru count is inflated by keyword matches. We track the local market in our guide to forward deployed engineer jobs in Hyderabad.
FDE salary by company tier: labs, startups, GCCs and IT services
This is the table that actually predicts your offer. Four tiers hire FDEs in India, and the title means something different in each.
| Tier | Examples | What public data says | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI labs and foreign product companies | Anthropic (Bengaluru), OpenAI, Databricks, Google Cloud, MongoDB | Anthropic US base $280,000–320,000; India bands not published. [PLACEHOLDER: verified India lab band] | Top of market, at or above the Levels.fyi 75th percentile of ₹42.2 L |
| Funded Indian AI startups | Sarvam AI, Cartesia, Pulsora, Supervity | CIEL HR client offers: entry ₹35–45 L, senior ₹70–90 L; Cartesia ₹70–90 L band | Upper quartile |
| GCC and MNC delivery | EPAM, Sutherland, Turing, Coforge, Coralogix | Mostly between Glassdoor’s ₹12.9–14.2 L average and AmbitionBox’s ₹20.6 L | Market centre; highest volume for experienced hires |
| IT-services FDE practices | TCS (target 5,900–8,900 forward-deployed AI engineers), Accenture (ServiceNow FDE program, May 2026) | ₹10–18 L | Lower half; highest volume for freshers and internal reskilling |
Two consequences follow. First, the same person can be offered ₹14 L and ₹38 L in the same month by employers in different tiers. Second, moving up a tier after one successful deployment is the single biggest pay event in an FDE career.

How does the Indian FDE salary compare with the US and UK?
| Market | Source | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| US, all postings | Bloomberry, 1,000 postings | Median $173,816 |
| US, verified submissions | Levels.fyi | Median $216,000 |
| US, new graduate | Palantir FDSE | $135,000–145,000 |
| US, AI lab | Anthropic FDE job description | $280,000–320,000 base |
| UK | [PLACEHOLDER: source] | [PLACEHOLDER: verified UK median] |
| India, verified submissions | Levels.fyi | Median ₹17.7 L |
At current exchange rates the Indian median is roughly one-eighth of the US median. That ratio is wider than for general software engineering, because the US FDE market is dominated by labs and well-funded startups while the Indian market is dominated by GCCs and services firms.
Fully remote US FDE roles for India-based candidates are rare. 68% of postings mention travel and the customer sites are in the US. The realistic international route is a GCC role in India, then an internal transfer or a relocation after one or two deployments.
Why do forward deployed engineer salary ranges differ so much?
- Title inflation. IT-services firms are relabelling integration and support engineers as FDEs at scale. TCS alone targets 5,900–8,900 forward-deployed AI engineers, most of them reskilled internally. Their pay stays on the services grid.
- Small samples. Levels.fyi has 12 Indian submissions. One lab offer moves the 75th percentile by lakhs.
- Equity. Lab and startup packages include equity that survey sites often omit. Fixed-pay comparisons understate the top tier and overstate the gap in cash.
- Scope. An FDE who owns a multi-crore deployment with a CISO sign-off is paid differently from one who configures a chatbot. Both carry the title.
- Travel and on-site work. Roles with heavy customer-site time usually pay a premium, and 68% of postings mention travel.
Are ₹35–55 L fresher FDE salaries real?
The claim circulates on LinkedIn and in course advertising. It traces to CIEL HR’s July 2026 note, which reported entry offers of ₹35–45 L among its clients, and to a handful of lab and startup offers to graduates from top-tier institutes with research or open-source track records.
For the median engineering graduate in Hyderabad, those offers do not exist. Glassdoor’s average sits at ₹12.9–14.2 L and IT-services practices start at ₹10–18 L. A fresher offer of ₹8–15 L for an FDE-titled role at a GCC or services firm is a good outcome, not a failure.
We tell every batch the same thing. Your first FDE job buys you a deployment story. Your second job prices that story. The jump between the first and second offer is where the large numbers appear.
How to negotiate a forward deployed engineer offer
- Anchor on tier, not title. Know which of the four tiers the employer is in and what that tier pays before the first call. Asking a services firm for a startup band wastes everyone’s time; accepting a services band from a startup leaves money on the table.
- Bring a deployment case study. One page: the customer, the constraint, what you built, the metric that moved, what broke. This is the artefact that moves you up a band.
- Show your eval report. A golden dataset, a scoring method and a regression history prove you ship production AI rather than demos.
- Quantify customer exposure. Discovery calls run, scoping documents written, demos delivered to executives. 55% of postings list this work first, so price it.
- Ask about travel and on-site expectations. Get the expected share in writing and negotiate a premium or an allowance if it is high.
- Settle level and scope before money. FDE levels map to pay bands. Arguing about a number inside the wrong band is a losing position.
The skills interviewers test to place you in a band are listed in our guide to forward deployed engineer skills and qualifications.
How training affects your first FDE offer
Training does not change the market. It changes which band you can credibly apply to. The gap between the IT-services band and the startup band is evidence: a live deployment, an eval suite, a security review, a scoping document. A program is worth its fee only if it produces those artefacts.
The FDE Career Program runs 18 weeks for ₹45,000 online or ₹55,000 classroom, with EMI options available, and ends with four graded projects and a live two-week forward deployment with a Brolly Group business unit or a Digital Brolly SME client as the customer. For engineers with 2–7 years of experience the 10-week FDE Advanced Program costs ₹30,000 online or ₹35,000 classroom and feeds an interview pipeline, with no guarantee language.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average forward deployed engineer salary in India?
Across public sources the centre of the market is ₹13 L to ₹21 L a year. Glassdoor averages ₹12.9 L to ₹14.2 L, Levels.fyi reports a median of ₹17.7 L from 12 submissions, 6figr reports ₹18.7 L and AmbitionBox ₹20.6 L. The top quartile, mostly AI labs and funded startups, earns ₹35 L to ₹90 L.
What is the forward deployed engineer salary for freshers in India?
A realistic fresher range is ₹8 L to ₹18 L, with IT-services FDE practices paying ₹10 L to ₹18 L. Offers of ₹35 L to ₹45 L for entry-level FDEs exist at a small number of funded AI companies, usually for graduates with research or open-source credentials, and should not be treated as the norm.
What is the FDE salary in Hyderabad?
Hyderabad FDE hiring is led by Turing, Sutherland, Pulsora, EPAM, TCS and Accenture, so most offers sit in the ₹10 L to ₹20 L range for early-career engineers and ₹20 L to ₹40 L for experienced hires at product and GCC teams. Verified Hyderabad-specific medians are not yet published at a reliable sample size.
Is a forward deployed engineer paid more than a software engineer in India?
At the same employer and level, FDEs are usually paid at or slightly above the software engineering band because of the customer-facing scope and travel. The large differences you see online come from comparing an FDE at an AI lab with a software engineer at a services firm. Compare within the same tier before drawing conclusions.
How much does a forward deployed engineer earn in the US?
Bloomberry found a median of $173,816 across 1,000 US postings, Levels.fyi reports a median of about $216,000, Palantir pays new graduate FDSEs $135,000 to $145,000, and Anthropic lists a base range of $280,000 to $320,000. These figures are roughly eight to ten times the Indian median in nominal terms.
