Forward Deployed Engineer Skills and Qualifications Employers Ask For (2026)

By Lokesh

Updated October 7, 2026

Checklist of forward deployed engineer skills grouped into applied AI, platform, data and customer craft

The forward deployed engineer skills employers ask for most are Python (66% of postings), AI agents (35%), TypeScript (35%), AWS (32%) and LLM engineering (31%), according to a January 2026 analysis of 1,000 job ads. More than half of those postings list customer-facing work before any technical skill, and most want 3–5 years of experience.

Key takeaways

  • Four hard-skill pillars: Python, an LLM and agent stack, one cloud (AWS first) and TypeScript. SQL, Docker and evals are assumed rather than listed.
  • Customer-facing skills come first in 55% of postings. They are graded in interviews, not treated as nice to have.
  • Experience: 60% of postings want 3–5 years, 20% want 6–8, and 12% accept 0–2. A specific degree is rarely decisive.
  • Skills are proven with artefacts: a deployed system, an eval report, a security evidence pack and a one-page case study.
  • Hyderabad employers weight enterprise integration (ServiceNow, Salesforce, SSO) and compliance more heavily than research credentials.

What skills does a forward deployed engineer need?

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds and deploys software, usually an AI system, inside a customer’s organisation and owns the outcome. Our pillar on what a forward deployed engineer is covers the role. The skill set follows from the job: build, deploy, evaluate, integrate, and work with the customer.

The best public data is Bloomberry’s January 2026 analysis of 1,000 FDE postings. The table shows what employers list and, from our own hiring conversations, what they actually test.

Hard skillShare of 1,000 postingsWhat employers test
Python66%API services, data wrangling, async, typing, tests
TypeScript35%Internal tools, dashboards, Next.js front ends
AI agents35%Tool calling, LangGraph or Claude Agent SDK, MCP servers, human-in-the-loop design
AWS32%IAM, VPC, deploying into a customer account, cost control
LLM engineering31%Structured outputs, RAG, prompt design, cost and latency budgets
SQL, Docker and Kubernetes, evals, Git and CINot tagged separatelyAssumed. Appear in requirement text and in nearly every take-home

Applied AI: LLMs, RAG, evals, agents and MCP

You call model APIs; you do not train models. The tested skills are structured outputs, retrieval with pgvector and hybrid search that respects the customer’s permissions, evaluation with golden datasets and LLM-as-judge, and agents that call enterprise systems through MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers with an approval step.

Anthropic’s FDE job description is explicit: ship MCP servers, sub-agents and agent skills for customers. OpenAI’s engagements put evals in a formal validation phase before delivery, as the Pragmatic Engineer reports. Evals are the skill that separates FDE candidates from prompt-engineering hobbyists.

Platform and delivery

FDEs deploy into environments they did not design: a private VPC, an on-prem Kubernetes cluster, a model gateway chosen by the customer’s security team. Docker, CI/CD, Kubernetes basics, Terraform and observability are the working minimum. Reading a cloud bill and explaining it to a finance manager is part of the job.

Data

Enterprise data is where most engagement time goes. SQL on PostgreSQL and SQL Server, pandas for clean-up, and the patience to profile a dataset with duplicates, encoding errors and columns nobody can explain. Every exercise in our programs runs on one fictional client, Deccan Finance, a mid-size NBFC, for exactly this reason.

Which soft and consulting skills do forward deployed engineers need?

55% of postings list customer-facing work before any technical requirement, and 68% mention travel to customer sites. Treat the list below as a second skill stack with its own interview round, usually a role-play or a case.

  • Discovery interviewing. Getting from “we want a copilot” to a measurable problem statement in two conversations.
  • Problem structuring. MECE problem trees and pyramid-principle writing, so a scoping document survives a sceptical CFO.
  • Written artefacts. Scoping PRDs, statements of work, weekly executive status notes, UAT plans.
  • Demoing. A ten-minute demo for a non-engineer that shows the metric, not the architecture.
  • Expectation management. Saying no to scope creep without losing the sponsor, and reporting a slipped week before the customer notices.
  • Working with security and procurement. Answering a 200-question vendor assessment and producing the evidence pack behind it.
  • Language. In Indian deployments the end users in a back office are often more comfortable in Telugu or Hindi. We practise demos in English and in Telugu or Hindi for that reason.

What qualifications do you need to be a forward deployed engineer?

Degree

A computer science or engineering degree is common and rarely decisive. Postings ask for shipped systems, not a transcript. A B.Tech from a tier-2 or tier-3 college in Telangana or Andhra Pradesh is not a barrier if the portfolio is strong.

Experience

Bloomberry’s distribution: 60% of postings ask for 3–5 years, 20% for 6–8 years and 12% for 0–2 years. Anthropic asks for 4+ years. The typical FDE is a mid-level engineer who has shipped production software and then added applied AI and customer skills.

Paths for freshers and early-career engineers

  • Internships. FDE Masters offers an internship in which interns work on live Brolly Software Solutions products. [PLACEHOLDER: internship duration], [PLACEHOLDER: stipend], [PLACEHOLDER: selection process].
  • GCC academies. EPAM runs a Hyderabad academy and plans 3,000+ India hires in 2026. These programs take early-career engineers and train them inside delivery teams.
  • IT-services FDE practices. TCS has targeted 5,900–8,900 forward-deployed AI engineers and Accenture launched a ServiceNow FDE program in May 2026. Lower pay, but real customers.
  • Startup tracks. Sarvam AI in Bengaluru runs a 1–3 year FDE track alongside its 2–5 and 4+ year tracks.
  • Adjacent roles. One to two years as a backend, data or solutions engineer, then a lateral move once you have a deployment to show.

Certifications

No employer requires an FDE certification. Cloud certifications help at GCCs and services firms because procurement teams recognise them. Course certificates, including our own FDE Masters Certified Forward Deployed Engineer – Associate and Professional credentials, matter only as a label on the portfolio behind them. Our guide to forward deployed engineer certification explains what each option signals.

Forward deployed engineer skills self-assessment checklist

Tick each item only if you have done it on a real or realistic dataset and could demo it today. Fewer than eight ticks means you should start at phase one of the forward deployed engineer roadmap. Eight to eleven means you are ready for an advanced track. Twelve or more means you should be applying.

  • I can build a typed, tested FastAPI service with OAuth2 or JWT authentication.
  • I can profile and clean a messy enterprise dataset in SQL and pandas and document what I changed.
  • I can ship an authenticated internal dashboard in TypeScript and React or Next.js.
  • I can deploy a containerised service to AWS inside a VPC with IAM scoped correctly.
  • I can write a CI/CD pipeline in GitHub Actions and a Terraform module for the infrastructure.
  • I can estimate the monthly token cost and latency of an LLM workload before building it.
  • I can build RAG with pgvector, hybrid search and a reranker that respects document permissions.
  • I can build a golden dataset and an eval suite with RAGAS or promptfoo that gates a deploy in CI.
  • I can build an agent with LangGraph or the Claude Agent SDK with a human approval step.
  • I can write an MCP server that exposes an enterprise system to an agent safely.
  • I can integrate SSO with OIDC or SAML and implement role-based access control.
  • I can explain how my system handles the OWASP LLM Top 10, prompt injection and PII under the DPDP Act 2023.
  • I can run a discovery call and turn it into a scoping PRD with success metrics.
  • I can give a ten-minute demo to a non-technical sponsor in English and, for Indian deployments, in Telugu or Hindi.

How do you prove forward deployed engineer skills?

Claims on a CV are discounted. Artefacts are not. Build these in this order.

  1. A deployed system with a real user. Not a notebook, not a localhost demo. Something a person other than you uses, behind authentication, on cloud infrastructure.
  2. An eval report. The golden dataset, the scoring method, the baseline, and the regression history across prompt and model changes. Two pages is enough.
  3. A deployment case study. One page: the customer context, the constraint, what you built, the metric that moved, what broke and what you changed. This single document does more in an interview than any certificate.
  4. A security evidence pack. Threat model, access control design, PII handling, prompt-injection tests, data residency. Hyderabad GCCs and banks ask for this before they ask for your code.
  5. Customer artefacts. A scoping PRD, a SOW and a status note from the project, even if the customer was role-played.
  6. A recorded demo. Ten minutes, aimed at a business sponsor.

For a sense of what deployed systems look like at this level, our team at Brolly Software Solutions has shipped a document-grounded RAG Chatbot, Brolly VoxFlow (spreadsheet-to-voice outbound call automation with RAG) and an ATS Resume Generator, among others. We walk through several in our piece on what forward deployed engineers build, and the questions that follow in our forward deployed engineer interview questions guide.

What do Hyderabad employers look for in an FDE?

Hyderabad’s FDE demand comes mainly from GCC and services employers: Turing, Sutherland, Pulsora, EPAM, TCS and Accenture. CIEL HR places the city in India’s top three for FDE hiring, behind Bengaluru’s roughly 50% share.

That employer mix changes the weighting. Enterprise integration, ServiceNow and Salesforce experience, SSO, and a credible compliance story count for more than research credentials or model fine-tuning. Candidates who can show a security evidence pack and a scoping document get further, faster. We track openings in our guide to forward deployed engineer jobs in Hyderabad.

If the checklist above showed gaps across all phases, the 18-week FDE Career Program covers each item against the Deccan Finance client and ends with a live two-week forward deployment. It runs in the classroom in Hyderabad near JNTU Metro in Kukatpally or live online, for ₹45,000 online or ₹55,000 classroom, with EMI options available.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most important forward deployed engineer skills?

Python (66% of postings), an AI agent and LLM stack (35% and 31%), TypeScript (35%) and AWS (32%) are the most listed hard skills, with SQL, Docker, Kubernetes and evals assumed. Customer-facing skills such as discovery, scoping and demos are listed first in 55% of postings and are tested in a separate interview round.

Do forward deployed engineers need a computer science degree?

No. A CS or engineering degree is common but not decisive. Employers evaluate shipped systems, eval reports and customer artefacts. Graduates from tier-2 and tier-3 colleges in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are hired into GCC and services FDE roles in Hyderabad when their portfolio shows a real deployment with security and evaluation work.

How many years of experience do you need to be an FDE?

Across 1,000 postings, 60% ask for 3 to 5 years, 20% for 6 to 8 years and 12% accept 0 to 2 years. Anthropic asks for 4 or more. Freshers usually enter through internships, GCC academies such as EPAM in Hyderabad, IT-services FDE practices or startup early-career tracks such as Sarvam AI’s 1 to 3 year track.

Is a certification required to become a forward deployed engineer?

No employer requires an FDE-specific certification. Cloud certifications help at GCCs and services firms because procurement teams recognise them. Course certificates, including FDE Masters Certified Forward Deployed Engineer credentials, are useful only as a label on a portfolio that contains a deployed system, an eval report and a case study.

Can I become an FDE without a machine learning background?

Yes. FDE work is applied: calling model APIs, building retrieval, writing evals and deploying securely. You do not train models. Understanding tokens, context windows, embeddings and evaluation metrics is enough, and deep learning mathematics is rarely tested. Solid software engineering and customer skills matter more than an ML research background.
