There is no single free forward deployed engineer course that covers the whole role, but you can assemble about 80% of the technical syllabus from free roadmaps, GitHub repos and videos. Below: the eight resources worth your time, what each is good for, an 8-week self-study plan, and the three things free learning cannot give you.
Key takeaways
- Eight free resources cover the FDE syllabus: roadmap.sh, three GitHub roadmaps, Krish Naik’s and codebasics’ roadmaps, the Pragmatic Engineer deep dive and the Wikipedia entry.
- Free material teaches the technology well (Python, RAG, agents, MCP, cloud). It does not teach customer work, which 55% of FDE postings list before coding.
- An 8-week plan at 12 to 15 hours a week gets you to three deployed projects if you commit to shipping, not just watching.
- Free learning has three gaps: no customer practice, no security review before deploy, no placement support.
- Paid FDE courses in Hyderabad range from ₹25,000 to ₹2,00,000; pay only when the gap you need to close is one of those three.
Is there a free forward deployed engineer course?
Not a complete one. A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds and deploys software, mostly AI systems today, inside a customer’s environment and owns the result, so the syllabus has two halves: engineering and customer craft. Free resources cover the first half thoroughly and the second half almost not at all.
If the role itself is new to you, read what a forward deployed engineer is first, then come back. Everything below assumes you know why the job exists and what a typical engagement looks like.
What are the best free FDE resources in 2026?
1. roadmap.sh Forward Deployed Engineer roadmap
roadmap.sh gives you the skill tree as a clickable diagram, with short notes and links on each node. Good for: deciding your order of study and spotting gaps. Weak on: depth, since each node is a pointer, not a lesson.
2. Awesome-FDE-Roadmap (GitHub)
pierpaolo28/Awesome-FDE-Roadmap is a curated list of articles, talks and tools grouped by FDE competency. Good for: reading lists on scoping, evals and enterprise integration. Weak on: hands-on exercises; it tells you what to read, not what to build.
3. fde-curriculum (GitHub)
Asresh/fde-curriculum is structured like a course outline, with week-by-week topics and project prompts. Good for: a ready-made study calendar you can fork and tick off. Weak on: graded feedback; nobody reviews your work.
4. forward-deployed-engineer-roadmap by thecoder8890 (GitHub)
thecoder8890’s roadmap leans practical, with repo links and tool-specific checklists for RAG, agents and deployment. Good for: a second opinion on the stack and concrete tool names. Weak on: customer-facing skills and enterprise identity topics.
5. Krish Naik’s AI Forward Deployed Engineer roadmap
Krish Naik’s roadmap pairs each stage with his free YouTube tutorials, which is useful if you learn from video. Good for: Python, LangChain and LangGraph basics with an Indian presenter. Weak on: production deployment and security; his paid course (₹10,000) goes further.
6. codebasics.io FDE roadmap
codebasics.io publishes an FDE roadmap with timelines and project suggestions, again backed by free videos. Good for: SQL, data handling and the business-context framing that many technical roadmaps skip. Weak on: MCP and agent orchestration depth.
7. The Pragmatic Engineer deep dive on FDEs
Gergely Orosz’s article on forward deployed engineers explains how Palantir created the role, why it had more FDEs than product engineers by 2016, and how OpenAI structures engagements as scoping, validation and delivery. Good for: understanding the job before an interview. Not a tutorial.
8. Wikipedia: Forward deployed engineer
The Wikipedia entry is short but useful for the definition, the history and the reference list at the bottom. Good for: a five-minute orientation and citations. Nothing more.

Want to become a Forward Deployed Engineer in Hyderabad?
Free resources get you to the code. The FDE Career Program adds the parts they cannot: a weekly Customer Engagement Lab, a security review before every deploy with SOC Masters faculty, and a live 2-week forward deployment. ₹45,000 online or ₹55,000 classroom, EMI options available.
How do you turn free resources into an 8-week self-study plan?
The plan below assumes 12 to 15 hours a week and some prior programming. It follows the same order as our forward deployed engineer roadmap, compressed, and every week ends with something deployed to a public URL. If you cannot deploy it, you have not finished the week.
| Week | Topic | Free resource to use | Ship by Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Python with typing and pytest, Git, Linux basics | Krish Naik Python playlist, roadmap.sh Python node | A tested CLI tool pushed to GitHub with CI running pytest |
| 2 | SQL on Postgres, messy data with pandas | codebasics SQL series, fde-curriculum week on data | A cleaned dataset loaded into Postgres with 10 analytical queries |
| 3 | REST APIs with FastAPI, OAuth2 and JWT | FastAPI official docs, thecoder8890 API checklist | A FastAPI service with login, deployed on a free cloud tier |
| 4 | Cloud and containers: AWS IAM, S3, RDS, Docker | AWS free tier docs, roadmap.sh cloud node | Week 3 service containerised and running on AWS with a database |
| 5 | LLM fundamentals: tokens, context, structured outputs, cost | Claude and OpenAI API docs, Krish Naik LLM videos | A structured-output extraction service with cost per call logged |
| 6 | RAG with pgvector, hybrid search, reranking | Awesome-FDE-Roadmap RAG section, codebasics RAG project | A document assistant over 100 PDFs with a 50-question golden set and RAGAS scores |
| 7 | Evals and observability, then agents and MCP | promptfoo and Langfuse docs, Claude Agent SDK and MCP docs | An agent with one MCP server and a human approval step, traced in Langfuse |
| 8 | Integration and deployment: SSO, GitHub Actions gate, Terraform | thecoder8890 deployment list, fde-curriculum capstone | All three projects behind OIDC login, with an eval gate blocking bad deploys |
Most self-learners stall at week 6. RAG tutorials make it look easy on clean text, and the first messy PDF set breaks everything. Budget extra time there and treat the golden set as the deliverable, not the chatbot.
What can free FDE learning not give you?
Three things, and they are the three things FDE interviews probe hardest. Bloomberry’s analysis of 1,000 FDE postings found 55% list customer-facing work before any technology and 68% mention travel to customer sites. No roadmap teaches that.
1. No customer practice
You cannot run a discovery call with yourself. Scoping a vague request into a PRD, writing a statement of work, sending a weekly executive status note and demoing to a non-technical sponsor are skills built by repetition with a counterpart who pushes back. In our programs that counterpart is a fictional NBFC, Deccan Finance, and the Friday Customer Engagement Lab exists only for this.
2. No security review before deploy
Free projects ship when they work. Enterprise projects ship when someone has checked them against the OWASP LLM Top 10, confirmed PII handling meets the DPDP Act 2023 and produced an evidence pack. Without a reviewer you never learn what a security team will reject, and that is the most common reason a first enterprise deployment slips.
3. No placement support
Self-study gives you projects; it does not give you an interview pipeline, mock interviews with people who have hired FDEs, or feedback on how you explain a project to a hiring manager. For freshers this gap matters most, because only 12% of FDE postings accept 0 to 2 years and referrals carry weight.
When should you pay for an FDE course?
Pay when the gap you need to close is one of the three above, not when you need another video on RAG. If you have already shipped the 8-week plan and interviews are still not converting, the missing piece is almost always customer craft or proof of a real deployment.
Prices vary widely. Public fees for FDE and FDE-adjacent courses available to Hyderabad learners run from ₹10,000 (Krish Naik, online) and ₹25,000 to 30,000 (Cloudsoft, realtrainings listings) through ₹49,999 plus GST (IIT Roorkee with Futurense) to ₹1,65,000 plus GST (IIT Delhi CEP) and ₹3,99,000 (Scaler, 12 months). Our FDE course fees in Hyderabad comparison lists each with duration and format.
FDE Masters sits in the middle of that band. The FDE Career Program is 18 weeks for ₹45,000 online or ₹55,000 classroom near JNTU Metro, with four graded projects, a security review before every deploy and a live 2-week forward deployment with a Brolly Group business unit.
If you already code and have 2 to 7 years, the shorter FDE Advanced Program at ₹30,000 online covers the same artefacts in 10 weeks. The online track runs the same live sessions for learners outside Hyderabad.
Whichever route you take, the test is the same: can you show a hiring manager a deployed system, an eval report and a recording of you demoing it to someone who is not an engineer? Free resources get you the first two. The third is the one worth paying for.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free forward deployed engineer course with a certificate?
No complete one exists as of October 2026. Free roadmaps on roadmap.sh and GitHub, plus Krish Naik’s and codebasics’ video-backed roadmaps, cover the technical syllabus. None include customer-facing practice, security review or a recognised certificate. Treat them as a self-study curriculum and build your own portfolio of deployed projects as the proof.
How long does it take to learn FDE skills for free?
At 12 to 15 hours a week, an 8-week plan gets a programmer to three deployed projects: an authenticated API on AWS, a RAG assistant with evals, and an agent with an MCP server and human approval. Beginners should add 4 to 6 weeks for Python and SQL. Customer-facing skills take longer because they need a counterpart to practise with.
Which free FDE roadmap is best for beginners in India?
Start with roadmap.sh for the overall map, then follow Krish Naik’s roadmap for Python, LangChain and LangGraph videos with an Indian presenter, and use codebasics for SQL and business framing. Add the Pragmatic Engineer article to understand the role before interviews. Fork fde-curriculum on GitHub as your week-by-week tracker.
Can I get an FDE job with only free resources?
It is possible for experienced engineers who already have customer exposure from a solutions or consulting role. For freshers it is hard: 12% of FDE postings accept 0 to 2 years, and 55% weight customer work first. Free resources prove you can code; you still need evidence of a real deployment and of demoing to non-technical stakeholders.
What does a paid FDE course add over free resources?
Three things free learning lacks: supervised customer practice such as discovery calls, scoping documents and executive demos; a security and compliance review before each deployment; and placement support with mock interviews and an employer pipeline. Fees in Hyderabad range from about ₹25,000 to ₹2,00,000, so compare what each program offers on those three points.
