How to Become a Forward Deployed Engineer After B.Tech (Fresher Guide, India 2026)

By Lokesh

Updated October 7, 2026

Flowchart showing three paths from B.Tech to a forward deployed engineer role in India

Here is how to become a forward deployed engineer after B.Tech: build production-grade Python and cloud skills, ship two or three LLM systems (RAG, agents, MCP) end to end, and get customer-facing experience through an internship or a solutions role. Most FDE postings want 3 to 5 years, so freshers enter through specific doors, mapped below for India in 2026.

Key takeaways

  • Only 12% of forward deployed engineer postings accept 0 to 2 years of experience; 60% ask for 3 to 5 years. Plan for a 1 to 3 year on-ramp, not a day-one FDE title.
  • Three realistic doors: IT-services FDE academies (EPAM, TCS, Accenture, Coforge), junior startup tracks (Sarvam AI’s 1 to 3 year track), and a solutions or implementation engineer role first.
  • A final-year plan works in three blocks: Semester 7 for fundamentals and cloud, Semester 8 for LLM projects and an internship, the first year after graduation for customer-facing work.
  • Fresher-level FDE pay in India sits around ₹10 to 18 L at IT-services practices; the Levels.fyi median across levels is ₹17.7 L.

Is a forward deployed engineer job realistic for a fresher?

A forward deployed engineer (FDE) is a software engineer who works inside a customer’s environment to build, integrate and deploy a product, today mostly AI systems, until the customer gets measurable value. If the role is new to you, read what a forward deployed engineer is first. The short version: half the job is engineering, the other half is sitting with the customer.

The experience bar is the honest problem. In a January 2026 analysis of 1,000 FDE postings, 12% accepted 0 to 2 years, 60% asked for 3 to 5 years and 20% for 6 to 8 years. The same study found 55% of postings list customer work before coding, and 68% mention travel.

Companies hesitate to put a fresher alone in front of a CIO, which is why the title usually arrives after a few years. The demand side is real, though. CIEL HR counted 52 Indian organisations hiring FDEs in July 2026, up 130% year on year, with Hyderabad in the top three cities and a deployable pool of only about 1,200 engineers.

What are the three doors into FDE work for B.Tech graduates?

Door 1: IT-services FDE academies

Indian IT-services firms are building forward-deployed AI practices at volume, and they hire freshers into them. EPAM runs a Hyderabad academy and plans over 3,000 India hires in 2026. TCS has a target of 5,900 to 8,900 forward-deployed AI engineers, Accenture uses the FDE title and launched a ServiceNow FDE program in May 2026, and Coforge has a Momentuum AI FDE unit.

Pay in these practices is roughly ₹10 to 18 L. The work is closer to implementation than greenfield building, but you get real enterprise customers and security reviews from year one. For a Hyderabad fresher this is the highest-probability door.

Door 2: Junior FDE tracks at AI startups

A few Indian AI companies publish FDE tracks by experience band. Sarvam AI in Bengaluru lists 1 to 3, 2 to 5 and 4+ year tracks. Hyderabad-based employers such as Turing, Sutherland and Pulsora have posted FDE roles; check current openings because seat counts are small and change monthly. [PLACEHOLDER: verify current junior FDE openings in Hyderabad and Bengaluru.]

This door needs a strong portfolio because there is no academy to train you. The upside is customer exposure in month one and the FDE title on your resume early.

Door 3: Solutions or implementation engineer first

Solutions engineer, implementation engineer and technical support roles at SaaS and data companies teach the customer half of the FDE job. MongoDB and Coralogix hire in Gurgaon; many Hyderabad SaaS offices have similar roles. After 18 to 24 months, with two or three AI projects on the side, the move to FDE is a lateral step.

The FDE Career Program is built for final-year students and freshers: 18 weeks, four graded projects on the Deccan Finance case, a weekly Customer Engagement Lab and a live 2-week forward deployment. Classroom near JNTU Metro or live online.

What should a final-year student do, semester by semester?

The plan below assumes you start in Semester 7 with basic programming and nothing else. It mirrors the order we teach in the FDE Career Program: fundamentals, cloud, then LLM systems, then customer craft.

BlockTechnical goalsCustomer and career goalsProof at the end
Semester 7 (Jul to Dec)Python to the pytest level, SQL on Postgres, Git, Linux, one FastAPI service with OAuth2 deployed on the AWS free tier in DockerApply for Jan to Apr internships; join one open-source repo; write a one-page README for every projectOne deployed API with a public URL and a README
Semester 8 (Jan to May)LLM fundamentals, a permission-aware RAG app on pgvector with a 50-question golden set, an agent with tool calling and a human approval stepInternship if the college allows; make the final-year project an enterprise use case with a fictional client; record a 3-minute demoTwo LLM projects with eval scores, one demo video
Months 1 to 3 after graduationAdd an MCP server to a developer sandbox (ServiceNow or Salesforce), CI gate with GitHub Actions, Terraform for one VPCApply to IT-services academies and startup junior tracks; practise discovery calls with friends playing the clientThree projects, one scoping document, interview-ready resume
Months 4 to 12Ship with a real customer in whatever role you landed; collect adoption and latency numbersOwn one status note per week; present one executive demoA case study with numbers you can talk about

Which projects should a fresher build for an FDE resume?

Hiring managers skim for the artefacts an FDE ships on the job. We cover these in detail in what forward deployed engineers build; the four below are the minimum set, in the order you should build them.

  1. Internal ops dashboard. Next.js front end, FastAPI back end, Postgres, a login that uses OIDC. This proves you can ship a boring, working web app, which is still most of the job.
  2. Permission-aware RAG over messy documents. Ingest PDFs and spreadsheets with inconsistent formats, use hybrid search plus a reranker, and make sure a user only sees chunks they are allowed to see. Publish RAGAS or promptfoo scores on a golden set.
  3. Agent with an MCP server and a human in the loop. Connect to a ServiceNow or Salesforce developer sandbox, let the agent draft a ticket or an update, and require approval before it writes. Log every step to Langfuse.
  4. Deployment inside a private network. Terraform a VPC, run the service on Kubernetes or ECS, add a GitHub Actions gate that blocks a deploy when evals drop, and write a one-page security note covering prompt injection and PII handling.

Each repo needs an architecture diagram, numbers (latency, cost per query, eval scores) and a short demo video. A project without numbers reads as a tutorial copy.

How do you get an FDE internship as a student?

FDE-titled internships are rare in India, so widen the net to AI engineering, solutions engineering and implementation internships. Palantir runs US new-grad and intern programs, IT-services academies take pre-final-year interns, and a handful of Indian AI startups post internships on their careers pages. We have a full walkthrough in our guide to forward deployed engineer internships in India.

FDE Masters also runs an FDE internship where students work on live Brolly Software Solutions products such as the RAG Chatbot and Brolly VoxFlow under the trainer who built them. Duration is [PLACEHOLDER: internship duration], stipend is [PLACEHOLDER: internship stipend] and selection is [PLACEHOLDER: internship selection process].

What should a fresher FDE resume contain?

Match the language of the postings. The 1,000-posting study found Python in 66% of FDE job descriptions, TypeScript in 35%, AWS in 32%, AI agents in 35% and LLM in 31%. Those words should appear in your project bullets, attached to things you actually built.

  • Headline: “B.Tech 2026, AI engineer with 3 deployed LLM projects and customer demo experience”. No adjectives.
  • Projects first, education second. Each project gets one line of context, two lines of what you built and one line of numbers.
  • One customer artefact. Link a scoping document, a status note or a recorded demo; almost no fresher has this.
  • Tools row: Python, FastAPI, Postgres and pgvector, TypeScript, AWS, Docker, GitHub Actions, Claude or OpenAI API, LangGraph, MCP, Langfuse.
  • Certifications: list any cloud or FDE certificate with the issuing body. [PLACEHOLDER: certification names and dates.]

How much does a fresher forward deployed engineer earn in India?

The numbers vary a lot by employer type, and most public figures mix levels. Use the table as a range, not a promise, and read our detailed FDE salary in India breakdown before negotiating.

Where does a training program fit in this plan?

A course cannot turn you into a 3-year engineer in 4 months. It can compress the project and customer-practice part of the plan above and give you a supervised real deployment. The FDE Career Program does this in 18 weeks: Monday to Friday 2 hours live plus a Friday Customer Engagement Lab, about 180 live hours and 200 lab hours.

Every exercise runs against one fictional client, Deccan Finance, a mid-size NBFC, and weeks 17 and 18 are a live 2-week forward deployment with a Brolly Group business unit or a Digital Brolly SME client. Fees are ₹45,000 online or ₹55,000 classroom in Kukatpally near JNTU Metro, with EMI options available and placement assistance until placed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I become a forward deployed engineer directly after B.Tech?

Rarely with that exact title. Only about 12% of FDE postings accept 0 to 2 years of experience. The realistic routes are an IT-services FDE academy, a junior track at an AI startup such as Sarvam AI, or a solutions or implementation engineer role for 18 to 24 months followed by a move to FDE.

Which B.Tech branch is best for becoming an FDE?

CSE and IT make the fundamentals easier, but FDE teams hire ECE, EEE and mechanical graduates who can code and talk to customers. Employers screen on deployed projects, Python, SQL, cloud basics and communication, not on the branch printed on the degree. Non-CSE students should budget one extra semester for fundamentals.

Do I need a master’s degree to become a forward deployed engineer?

No. FDE job descriptions at Palantir, OpenAI, Anthropic and Indian employers ask for shipped systems and customer experience, not a postgraduate degree. A master’s can help if it includes an industry project, but two years of solutions or implementation work usually moves you closer to an FDE role than two years of coursework.

Is forward deployed engineer a good career for freshers in India?

The demand trend is strong: CIEL HR reports a 130% year-on-year rise in Indian organisations hiring FDEs, with Hyderabad in the top three cities and a deployable pool of about 1,200 engineers. The caveat is the experience bar. Freshers should expect to spend 1 to 3 years in adjacent roles before holding the full FDE title.

How long does it take to become an FDE after B.Tech?

Through an IT-services academy, you can hold a forward-deployed AI engineer title within 6 to 12 months of graduating. Through the solutions-engineer route, plan for 18 to 36 months. A structured program like the 4-month FDE Career Program shortens the project and customer-practice phase but does not replace the first year of real customer work.
